Simply put, it's running with a halftime.
If you enter an official Double in your community, you will be running a race consisting of two separate stages with a recovery break, colloquially called a Halftime, in between. Where you finish is based on your combined time for the two legs or stages. A longer first stage is always followed by a shorter second stage, regardless of the distance of the Double.
The variety of Double distances, like our sport itself, is evolving and it now includes the Sprint Double 1.5 Mile (Mile + Half-Mile), the 5K Double (3K + 2K), 8K Double (5K + 3K), 10K Double (6K + 4K), 15K Double (10K + 5K), Half- Marathon Double 13.1 (10M + 5K), and Marathon Double 26.2 (20M + 10K).
Regardless of the Double you're running, all Double runs incorporate the innovative and strategic challenge of the Halftime break. This is what makes Double Racing so different and more strategically and physically challenging than regular racing, but challenge is what makes the running world go round as we all know.
The time spent in the Halftime recovery zone is where Double Runners as a group can recover and prepare for the second leg of the race. The length of the Halftime break varies depending on your first leg time and the distance of the Double. One thing you can count on is more social interaction and camaraderie than you’ve ever seen at a race.
The halftime recovery zone can include stationary bikes, massage therapists, chiropractors, stretching mats, foam rollers, fitness balls, nutrition and hydration. Double Runners call their sport the most socially fun and strategically challenging running event in the world – and for good reason!
